Orphan Educational Support

Although Primary education in Uganda has been free since 2001, fees are still payable at secondary level and as a result, many orphaned children are denied access to secondary education due to the lack of financial support.

Since its inception in 2003 the Educational Support Scheme has linked sponsors in the UK with orphans in Uganda allowing them to study to O and A level standard. The scheme is managed by a local pastor, who monitors their progress, ensures they are adequately clothed, and encourages letter writing between the child and sponsor.

Further Educational Support

Similarly saltpetertrust has also linked private sponsors in the UK with Ugandans undertaking professional training who have been unable to support themselves. To date these include an agriculturalist, an accountant and 2 medical assistants and a dentist.

In 2003 saltpetertrust linked a Ugandan Dental Trainee, Robert Okiror, with funding from the Christian Dental Fellowship in the UK to pay for his continued study to degree standard. Robert graduated in 2006 and now works bringing dental care to remote rural communities in the Soroti area. He is the first professional to be recruited to work in the Soroti Baptist Medical Centre when it is completed.
